The golden domes of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral are the defining image of Sofia. For the best exterior shots, photograph from the park to the south-east in the morning when the light hits the domes. The interior is equally stunning — dark and atmospheric with golden icons and candlelight.
Visit at sunrise for golden light on the domes with no crowds — the square is nearly empty before 7:00.
NDK Fountains & South Park
The cultural palace's dramatic fountain plaza.
The National Palace of Culture (NDK) features a grand fountain plaza that comes alive in summer with colourful light shows. The fountains create beautiful reflections, especially at dusk. South Park behind NDK offers tree-lined paths and a view of Vitosha Mountain framed by greenery.
The fountain light show runs from May to October — arrive 30 minutes before sunset for the best combination of natural and artificial light.

For a sweeping panorama of Sofia with the Balkan Mountains in the background, head to the Kopitoto viewpoint on Vitosha. On a clear day, you can see the entire city basin. The Aleko area near the gondola station also offers excellent vistas, especially at sunset.

The monumental communist-era architecture along Patriarch Evtimiy Boulevard and around the Largo offers striking geometric compositions. The former Party House, the TZUM building, and the residential blocks in Lyulin and Mladost districts provide a fascinating contrast to the city's ancient and modern architecture.
