Sofia offers excellent budget accommodation. Hostels in the city centre start from 8–13 € per night for a dorm bed. Budget hotels and guesthouses range from 25–40 € for a private room. Look for places near the metro for easy access to all attractions.
Book hostels on Vitosha Boulevard or near Serdika station for the best location-to-price ratio.
Eating on a Budget

Sofia is one of Europe's most affordable capitals for food. The Central Market (Zhenski Pazar) has fresh produce and street food for under 2,50 €. Bakeries sell banitsa (cheese pastry) for under 1 €. Student canteens near Sofia University serve full meals for 2,50–4 €. Most restaurants offer lunch set menus for 5–8 €.
Banitsa and boza from a street bakery is the cheapest and most authentic Sofia breakfast — under €1.50.
Getting Around Cheaply
Navigate Sofia without spending much.
A single metro/bus/tram ticket costs under €1. A day pass for unlimited rides on all public transport is just €2. The city centre is very walkable — most major attractions are within a 20-minute walk of each other. Avoid taxis for short distances and use the metro instead.
Buy a contactless transport card at any metro station — it's cheaper per ride than individual tickets.
Free Sights & Activities
Experience Sofia's best without spending a euro.
Many of Sofia's top attractions are free: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (free entry), Serdika Roman ruins in the metro (free), all city parks including Borisova Gradina, the Mineral Baths exterior and fountains, and the Parliament area. National museums are free on the first Sunday of each month. Free walking tours depart daily from the Palace of Justice.
