Best Time to Visit Sofia

A season-by-season guide to visiting Sofia — weather, crowds, events, and what to expect throughout the year.

Spring (March–May)

Mild temperatures, blooming parks, and fewer crowds make spring one of the best times to visit Sofia.

Spring in Sofia is beautiful, with temperatures rising from 8°C in March to 20°C in May. The city's parks and gardens burst into bloom, especially Borisova Gradina and the South Park. Crowds are thinner than in summer, making it ideal for sightseeing. Light rain is possible, so pack a light jacket. Outdoor cafes begin to open, and the city feels lively after winter. The Sofia Film Festival takes place in March.

Late April and May offer the best combination of warm weather and low crowds — highly recommended for first-time visitors.

Summer (June–August)

Hot and sunny with temperatures above 30°C — perfect for outdoor cafes, Vitosha hikes, and evening strolls.

Summers in Sofia are warm to hot, with temperatures regularly exceeding 30°C in July and August. The city is lively with outdoor dining, street performers, and cultural events. Vitosha Mountain offers a refreshing escape from the heat, with hiking trails just 30 minutes from the centre. This is the busiest tourist season, so popular attractions can be crowded. Air conditioning is standard in most hotels and restaurants. Sofia Pride takes place in June, and the Sofia Beer Fest in August.

Escape the midday heat by heading to Vitosha Mountain — it is 10°C cooler than the city and just a bus ride away.

Autumn (September–November)

Golden colours, wine season, and a rich cultural calendar make autumn a wonderful time to explore Sofia.

Autumn brings mild, pleasant weather with temperatures between 10°C and 22°C. September is still warm enough for outdoor dining and light clothing. October brings stunning golden foliage to the city's parks and surrounding mountains. This is wine season in Bulgaria, and many wine bars and festivals celebrate the harvest. The cultural calendar picks up with theatre, music, and art exhibitions. November gets colder, so pack warmer layers.

September is the ideal autumn month — warm weather, golden light, and wine festival season across Bulgaria.

Winter (December–February)

Cold and sometimes snowy — enjoy Christmas markets, cosy restaurants, and skiing at nearby Borovets.

Winters in Sofia are cold, with temperatures between -2°C and 5°C. Snowfall is common, transforming the city into a picturesque winter scene. December brings festive Christmas markets to the city centre, with stalls selling mulled wine, traditional crafts, and Bulgarian treats. The ski resort of Borovets is just 70 km from Sofia (about 1 hour by car), offering affordable skiing and snowboarding. Indoor attractions, museums, and thermal spas are popular during this season.

Combine a Sofia city break with skiing at Borovets — it is one of the most affordable ski destinations in Europe.

Major Events & Festivals

Sofia hosts a vibrant calendar of events year-round, from film festivals to beer fests and cultural celebrations.

Key annual events include the Sofia Film Festival (March), Sofia Dance Week (April), Sofia Pride (June), the Sofia Summer Festival (July–August), the Sofia Beer Fest (August), and the Sofia Christmas Market (December). The Night of Museums in May opens galleries and museums for free evening visits. The Kapana Arts Festival and various wine events draw visitors in autumn. Check the local events calendar before your trip to coincide with festivals.

The Sofia Film Festival in March and the Beer Fest in August are the two most popular events — book accommodation early.
