museumTucked away in the green surroundings of Sofia’s Lozenets neighborhood, near South Park, the Late Antique Mausoleum Lozenets is a hidden cultural gem that combines ancient history with a relaxing park environment.
At the heart of the complex lie the preserved remains of a Late Antique mausoleum, dating from the late 4th to the mid-5th century AD, when the city—then known as Serdica—was an important center of the Roman and early Byzantine world. The structure is believed to have been part of a suburban villa belonging to a wealthy and high-ranking citizen.
The building itself is notable for its relatively large size and structured layout, including multiple rooms and a central burial chamber. The most striking feature is the presence of three massive stone sarcophagi, still in their original positions, offering insight into elite burial customs of the time.
Archaeological excavations, which began in the mid-20th century, uncovered various artifacts such as coins and glass vessels associated with burial rituals. Some of these finds are now preserved in Sofia’s museums.
Today, the site has been fully restored and transformed into a modern archaeological park. Visitors can explore the ruins through well-designed pathways, read informative panels about the history and discoveries, and enjoy a calm atmosphere surrounded by greenery.
The complex also includes a visitor information center and a children’s educational area, making it suitable for both casual visitors and families.
Visit during daylight hours for the best experience and visibility of the ruins. Combine your visit with a walk in nearby South Park. Take time to read the on-site information panels—they provide useful historical context. Ideal for a short visit (30–60 minutes). Suitable for families with children, thanks to the educational area. Wear comfortable shoes, as the site includes walking paths.
